My Experience of Obtaining the English 4 Certificate

As a non-native English speaker, I always aimed to acquire the highest level of English proficiency. Therefore, I decided to take the English 4 Certificate, which is considered the most difficult level for non-native speakers. In this article, I will share my experience of preparing for and obtaining the English 4 Certificate.

Preparation

I started preparing for the English 4 Certificate six months prior to the test date. I knew that it required a thorough understanding of English grammar, extensive vocabulary, and excellent reading and listening skills. To achieve these goals, I adopted several strategies that helped me to improve my English proficiency.

Firstly, I read English books, newspapers, and websites extensively. Reading broadened my vocabulary and helped me to understand different sentence structures. Secondly, I listened to English podcasts and watched English movies and TV shows. This helped me improve my listening skills and understand different accents and dialects. Thirdly, I practiced writing compositions and speaking with native English speakers. This helped me to improve my grammatical accuracy, fluency, and coherence.

The Test

The English 4 Certificate test consists of four parts: reading, listening, writing, and translation. In the reading part, I had to answer multiple-choice questions based on various passages. The passages ranged from simple texts to complex academic papers. In the listening part, I had to listen to audio recordings and answer multiple-choice questions based on the heard materials.

The writing part consisted of two tasks: a short composition and an essay. The short composition required me to describe a picture or express my opinion on a given topic. The essay, on the other hand, required me to write a short argumentative or discursive essay on a given topic. Finally, in the translation part, I had to translate a passage from Chinese to English.

Result and Reflection

I received my English 4 Certificate with a score of 580 out of 710 points. I was thrilled, as it proved my hard work and dedication had paid off. However, I knew that this was just the beginning of my journey to English proficiency, and I needed to continue studying and practicing to maintain and improve my level.

The journey of obtaining the English 4 Certificate was a challenging but rewarding experience. It not only improved my English proficiency but also boosted my confidence and self-esteem. I believe that anyone can achieve their English learning goals with hard work, dedication, and proper strategies.
